What is Asian Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Charles K. Lee is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who understands the intricate anatomy of the Asian eyelid. He provides men and women in San Francisco, CA with authentic results without compromising their Asian heritage. Many of the L Plastic Surgery patients who have consultations for this surgery (also known as double eyelid surgery or supra-tarsal crease blepharoplasty) just want their eyes to appear more open. If your eyelid fold is absent, Dr. Lee will improve your appearance, reduce irritation from inverted eyelashes, and/or amend asymmetries present with surgery for a natural result. The characteristics of your new eyelids will not change your Asian countenance.

Asian eyelid surgery is not the same surgery as an upper or lower eyelid lift. It has its own technically demanding processes that requires precise planning and execution of microplastic techniques. Dr. Lee is a known leader in the field of Asian cosmetic surgery, and he recently published a textbook chapter in the Clinics in Plastic Surgery, describing his techniques and results to help teach other plastic surgeons. At L Plastic Surgery, we also offer revision Asian eyelid surgery for patients from the United States, Asia, and Europe. If you would like to have a private consultation with Dr. Lee, please call and schedule your appointment today.

Do you offer Epicanthoplasty?

Dr. Lee is also highly skilled in the epicanthoplasty surgical technique, which opens up the inner eyelid covered by excess skin. You can have an epicanthoplasty with or without an Asian eyelid surgery. Most patients that do have the physical features to perform this technique have both surgeries together.

With this technique, Dr. Lee would make tiny incisions near the inner eye area of the lid. To minimize scarring, Dr. Lee would incorporate an advanced medial epicanthoplasty through the small lower lid incision for consistency.

Do I qualify for this surgery?

If you are an Asian man and woman who would like to change the features of their eyelids, then you may be a great candidate for this double eyelid surgery. Candidates for Asian eyelid surgery may have:

  • No eyelid folds
  • Impaired vision due to hanging skin of the upper eyelid
  • Chronic irritation from inverted eyelashes
  • Eyelids that are not the same size or shape

In your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Lee, he will examine your facial features and talk to you about your aesthetic goals for plastic surgery. Then, he will provide you with a customized treatment plan with detailed specifics for the technique.

Dr. Lee's Surgical Techniques

Dr. Lee performs Asian eye lid surgery using the finest German and Swiss medical instruments and fine sutures. If you have this procedure, you can expect to go under a local anesthetic. The procedure takes about an hour for Dr. Lee to perform. Each surgical plan will be based on the needs of the patient. Usually, Dr. Lee modifies the orbicularis muscle, the orbital fat, the orbital septum, the levator muscle, and the tarsus. He will close any incision with ultra-fine sutures to discourage excessive scarring.

Asian Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Once you are discharged, you will be sent home to relax and recover. Dr. Lee will give you several post-op instructions to follow and will ask that you keep your head elevated for the first several days. Bruising and swelling will occur and may last for several weeks. It takes approximately 3 – 4 weeks for the results to appear. This surgery leads to very minimal scarring due to the location of the incisions. Not only will you look rejuvenated and refreshed, but you may also have improved vision due to excess skin being removed.
