What is Asian Eyelid Surgery?
Dr. Charles K. Lee is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who understands the intricate anatomy of the Asian eyelid. He provides men and women in San Francisco, CA with authentic results without compromising their Asian heritage. Many of the L Plastic Surgery patients who have consultations for this surgery (also known as double eyelid surgery or supra-tarsal crease blepharoplasty) just want their eyes to appear more open. If your eyelid fold is absent, Dr. Lee will improve your appearance, reduce irritation from inverted eyelashes, and/or amend asymmetries present with surgery for a natural result. The characteristics of your new eyelids will not change your Asian countenance.
Asian eyelid surgery is not the same surgery as an upper or lower eyelid lift. It has its own technically demanding processes that requires precise planning and execution of microplastic techniques. Dr. Lee is a known leader in the field of Asian cosmetic surgery, and he recently published a textbook chapter in the Clinics in Plastic Surgery, describing his techniques and results to help teach other plastic surgeons. At L Plastic Surgery, we also offer revision Asian eyelid surgery for patients from the United States, Asia, and Europe. If you would like to have a private consultation with Dr. Lee, please call and schedule your appointment today.
Do you offer Epicanthoplasty?
Dr. Lee is also highly skilled in the epicanthoplasty surgical technique, which opens up the inner eyelid covered by excess skin. You can have an epicanthoplasty with or without an Asian eyelid surgery. Most patients that do have the physical features to perform this technique have both surgeries together.
With this technique, Dr. Lee would make tiny incisions near the inner eye area of the lid. To minimize scarring, Dr. Lee would incorporate an advanced medial epicanthoplasty through the small lower lid incision for consistency.

"I Had a Great Experience, Warm and Help Staff! Dr. Lee - I have been thinking about getting Asian eyelid surgery for many years. I have always felt insecure about my eyes. Eye makeup is a struggle! I was tired of drawing thick eyeliner that doesn't even show. I learned about Dr. Lee via google and yelp. I was so scared to get surgery since it my first time. The good reviews on yelp gave me the courage to call Dr. Lee's office for a consultation. I spoke to Diana on the phone. She was very friendly and patient over the phone. She answered all my questions. She made me feel very comfortable. I was anxious going into the consultation but consultation day went smoothly. Shortly after I arrived, I was greeted by Diana and escorted to a room. I wrote down a long list of questions and Dr. Lee patiently answered all my questions. He also showed me before and after pictures of his work. Dr. Lee's experience and work reassured me that I was going to get very natural results! Surgery day went smoothly. I was surprised that it was a quick procedure under local anesthesia. It been a month since surgery and I am super happy with my results! There is still a little bit of swelling but the folds is very natural. Putting on eyeliner is a breeze now. I no longer have to spent 10 minutes drawing a thick eye liner. I love my Asian eyelids! If you want a experienced surgeon with Asian eyes, Dr. Lee is the one."- S. / RealSelf / Mar 19, 2019
"New found eyelashes - I just graduated college and wanted to get Asian eyelid surgery before I started a new job. My mom heard of Dr. Lee through one of her friends and made me an appointment. I didn't really know what to expect when I went in, but Dr. Lee was very nice and seemed knowledgable in his work. I am only 3 weeks out from surgery, so I still have some swelling, but I can already see that my eyes are more..."- P. / RealSelf / Mar 19, 2018
"Asian Eyelid Surgery Was a Breeze - Since I was very young girl, I've always wanted to find a solution for my monolids. I am your typical girly girl and creating different looks with make-up has become a passion of mine. I found it hard to show my creativity with eyeshadow since I had monolids. After much research and numerous consultations up and down the coast, Dr. Charles Lee's office by far had the most pleasant and most knowledgeable staff. Dr. Lee was very warm and welcoming. Dr. Lee took his time to explain everything in detail and gave me important insight on the procedure as well as what my options are with how I want my creases to look like. He showed me before and after photos of his previous patients with similar cases and different results (height and crease shape) depending on the outcome of how the patient wanted to look after surgery. I loved how all the results from his previous patients had looked so natural. Fast track to today, I am 1 year post surgery and I am more in love with my eyelids. So many of my friends/family have noticed a difference in me but couldn't pinpoint what changed, but I proudly say that I had Asian Eyelid Surgery with Dr. Charles Lee. Since then, a couple of my friends have also come to see him for their cosmetic procedures (Asian Eyelid Surgery, Rhinoplasty, Breast Augmentation as well as injectables). I am forever grateful for Dr. Lee's expertise, professionalism and even for just being such a genuine person, but most importantly for this life changing experience that I've been waiting to do for the longest time. Thank you, Dr. Lee and your awesome staff for making this journey a breeze."- O. / RealSelf / Mar 19, 2019
Do I qualify for this surgery?
If you are an Asian man and woman who would like to change the features of their eyelids, then you may be a great candidate for this double eyelid surgery. Candidates for Asian eyelid surgery may have:
- No eyelid folds
- Impaired vision due to hanging skin of the upper eyelid
- Chronic irritation from inverted eyelashes
- Eyelids that are not the same size or shape
In your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Lee, he will examine your facial features and talk to you about your aesthetic goals for plastic surgery. Then, he will provide you with a customized treatment plan with detailed specifics for the technique.
Dr. Lee's Surgical Techniques
Dr. Lee performs Asian eye lid surgery using the finest German and Swiss medical instruments and fine sutures. If you have this procedure, you can expect to go under a local anesthetic. The procedure takes about an hour for Dr. Lee to perform. Each surgical plan will be based on the needs of the patient. Usually, Dr. Lee modifies the orbicularis muscle, the orbital fat, the orbital septum, the levator muscle, and the tarsus. He will close any incision with ultra-fine sutures to discourage excessive scarring.
Asian Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Once you are discharged, you will be sent home to relax and recover. Dr. Lee will give you several post-op instructions to follow and will ask that you keep your head elevated for the first several days. Bruising and swelling will occur and may last for several weeks. It takes approximately 3 – 4 weeks for the results to appear. This surgery leads to very minimal scarring due to the location of the incisions. Not only will you look rejuvenated and refreshed, but you may also have improved vision due to excess skin being removed.

Dr. Lee would maintain the specific characteristics and desired lines for your Asian face. As for Asian eyelid surgery, there anatomic structures in the Asian eyelid that must be addressed for an optimal result.
How long will my results last?
